Rich was born and raised in Upper Saddle River, New Jersey. He moved with his parents and sister, Sherry, to Fairmont, Minnesota at the end of his junior year in high school. He graduated from Fairmont high school in 1971. He attended the University of Minnesota, School of Architecture for two years. He returned to Fairmont in 1973 and went to work full-time at Weigh-Tronix.


In 1978 Rich left Fairmont to return to college. He met his wife Diana at college and they were married in September 1978. He and Diana remained in Wheaton and raised four children: Phoebe, Clement, Tabitha and Chloe. His children are all grown and married. Rich is retired and writing several historical works. One is a history of Weigh-Tronix. His wife is the senior paralegal for a national Health Care Provider based out of Las Vegas, NV. They recently returned to live in Fairmont.
